We consider one of our son's best friends a third son; most moms can relate to a friend becoming part of the family. This young man did that for us, sharing in graduations, weddings, and family celebrations. When he joined the Navy Nuke program, we couldn't have been prouder. Now an active Navy serviceman, he's enjoying the life.
Recently, as his 30th birthday approached, I wanted to do something extra special. I found a vendor to engrave his name and rank on a whiskey flask and glasses. It's a good thing I had the vendor send it to me first, because the order was incorrect. They promised to fix it and sent a second set, which was even worse. With his birthday fast approaching, and at the suggestion of our other children, we found a better vendor—a Navy veteran himself—who rushed the order. Since he provided a proof, I trusted him to ship it directly to our boy.
I received a delivery notification and called our "third son," excitedly telling him a surprise was waiting on his porch. He rushed home from base, only to find nothing there. I couldn't believe it! After two failures from the crummy vendor, now the package was missing! He checked with neighbors, but no one had it. We contacted the post office, and with the help of my local post office in Alabama and his post office 1,200 miles north in New England, his town's postmaster located the box. It had been accidentally delivered three towns away. The postmaster personally retrieved it and delivered it himself!
I've never been so frustrated, worked so hard to deliver a single gift, and then been so humbled by that postmaster! It was all worth it! Our guy was speechless, his emotion evident. Check out the pic below.

"Home Alone" - the Movie! |
|
|
Did you know that most of John Candy's part in Home Alone was purely impromptu? Director Chris Columbus's dream was to cast John Candy, but Candy only had one day available for filming. When he arrived, he told the crew, "Take as much time as you need. It's fine." They ended up shooting him for 23 of the 24 hours he had! Columbus simply let the cameras roll, and the team mostly just watched Candy perform!
John Candy drew inspiration from a previous character he'd played in a Canadian sketch: Yosh Shmenge, a polka player. Imagine Catherine O'Hara trying to sit opposite him without breaking character as he improvised that entire scene straight from his head. You can actually see her having to turn away a couple of times to keep from laughing! She later said there was nothing to improve about his performance.
